Teamwork Makes the Dream Work – Altec Comes Together to Support Breast Cancer Awareness

To support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Altec team came together yesterday, Sunday October 22nd, to support this worthy cause that affects so many people directly and indirectly.  Employees joined together to participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K hosted by The American Cancer Society in Costa Mesa, CA as a show of support for employees and family members that have been impacted by this disease.

We also consider this a celebration for our own Linda Turner, Altec Business Development Manager and 7-year breast cancer survivor.  Linda has led this walk for Altec for several years and is an amazing example of perseverance and strength.

The statistics are staggering – odds are all of us know at least one person struggling with breast cancer (from breastcancer.org):

  • About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.
  • In 2017, an estimated 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 63,410 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.
  • Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. In 2017, it’s estimated that about 30% of newly diagnosed cancers in women will be breast cancers.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks raise awareness and funds to save lives from breast cancer. Each event is a noncompetitive 3 to 5 mile walk that brings people together to make a difference for everyone who has been touched by breast cancer. The events raise money to fund innovative research, provide free information and support, and to help people reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable.
