Getting to Know Altec – Tim Panichi

It’s been a while since we’ve highlighted one of our amazing Altec people so we’re introducing you to our newest team member, Tim Panichi, Northwest Sales Director.  Tim just joined us in March and prior to that was a police officer, worked with the Department of Defense, and continues to develop his interest, education and experience in cyber security and information technology and services.

What was your first job?

I worked mowing lawns during the summer with a lawnmower my dad bought me when I was 8!  But my first year-round job was when I was 14.  I worked for a gentleman nearby who had his own private business out of his home.  I’m not exactly sure what his business entailed, but he would collect used wooden pallets that I would repair and rebuild them for him to sell.  I really like the outdoors and working with my hands so it was a great opportunity to get paid doing both!

What’s been your career path before landing at Altec?

I’ve done two stints in the Armed Forces – initially in the Marines for 8 years, and then in the Air Force reserves – and I also spent several years in law enforcement.  As far as studies, I earned a degree in Cyber Security and still continue furthering my education.  But when my son was born he spent 6 weeks in the ICU.  I decided then that even though I loved what I was doing, I needed to rethink my career choice and find something that would allow me to be home more.  A dear friend advised me to look into technology sales, and since then I haven’t looked back!

How did your time in the military prepare you for sales?

My first tour of service with the Marines instilled in me an indominable spirit of setting goals and achieving those goals, sometimes through pure tenaciousness.  Tmove-the-ball-forward mentality has helped me a lot in my career.  Then during my second stint I was working in military intelligence and I really enjoyed using my technical expertise in my work.  So I have been able to bring much of what I learned in the military with me in my current career.

What attracted you to Altec?

First of all the DocLink product is exceptional, it truly has the capability to make people’s lives easier in the workplace, and that’s important to me – to be helping customers.  I could tell, even during the interview process, that there was a lot of mutual respect for each other inside the organization, and a strong spirit of service and willingness to work hard.  It’s very much a team, a family really, and that really impressed me. I wanted to work for a great company and am very happy with my decision.

What do you like most about your career?

The flexibility mixed in with the fact that I can be incredibly successful in contributing to my customers’ success.  And the ability to create friendships with my customers and partners.

What do you like to do outside of work?

Spend time with my family first of all.  I have two kids, a son and daughter, both in their early 20’s who live nearby and are working and going to college.  And I love my dogs, they’re all fosters/rescues and they are so much fun.  I enjoy outdoor activities and watching college football, professional basketball and hockey.  Also autocross – I love automobiles, or a any vehicle in general, I’ve always loved anything mechanical.  I have a bit of a sweet tooth for fast vehicles, like Ricky Bobby!

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

Collectively, over the years, I have moved and lived in 38 different residences here in the US and abroad.  And I love it here in Washington, but if I had my choice my dream would be to live somewhere, anywhere on the shore of a nice, warm beach where I could walk out onto my lanai or deck and just walk straight into the sand.

If you could have a conversation with any person living or deceased, who would it be and why?

I think the 14th Dalai Lama.  I think a lot could be learned from his evolved perspective, and sincerity and love for all living beings.

What would you sing at karaoke night?

I can’t sing!! I think an alcoholic beverage or two would need to be consumed for me to do that, and I would recommend the audience have a drink or two as well if they have to listen!  I do sing for my dogs and they don’t seem to mind but humans?  No way!

What makes you laugh the most?

Silly things really.  For instance, I love Will Ferrell movies, they just crack me up.

What is your favorite meal?

I enjoy a good steak but honestly, I just love breakfast.  Could eat breakfast for any meal!

What are you watching on TV right now?

Honestly, I don’t watch much TV, but there’s been a few series I have enjoyed.  I like historical shows where I can learn and be entertained like the series Marco Polo.  Also vehicle restoration type stuff or anything about Vikings is fascinating to me.  I’m very much a student and always want to learn, so much of my time right now is working on furthering my education in cyber security and in other areas of interest.
