Celebrate National Dog Day with Altec!

People adopt dogs for a variety of reasons…to have fur-babies instead of human children, as a family pet to grow up with your kids, to replace a child who’s gone off to college, or more recently to make quarantine less monotonous for everyone in your household!

Dogs are a person’s best friend for a reason, so of course we need to celebrate them! Our furry friends range in all different shapes, sizes, and breeds – there is a dog out there for everyone.

Today is National Dog Day, which was first created over 15 years ago by Colleen Paige, a Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate. Her purpose was to celebrate all dogs, but more importantly to bring attention to the number of dogs in shelters and encourage adoption to those who have yet to find a place to call home. August 26 is significant to Colleen because it was the day her family adopted her Sheltie when she was 10 years old.

While the current pandemic has negatively impacted practically everything around the globe, it’s been a huge positive for shelter and rescue dogs that have been adopted in greater numbers than ever before. But many pets continue to fill shelters and rescues, so if you have room in your home and heart, it’s always a good time to add a new family member or two! Dogs can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, ease loneliness, encourage exercise and playfulness, and even improve your cardiovascular health.

Some very special dogs even become service dogs for countless veterans, people who are blind/visually impaired, and families affected by autism or other disabilities. We suggest checking out an amazing documentary entitled Pick of the Litter to follow a litter of puppies through the process of becoming a guide dog.

To find your perfect dog, PetFinder is an excellent resource where you can search their national database of rescue and shelter postings. Or you can visit websites of local shelters and rescues that you can easily find through online searches.

Whether you like big dogs or small dogs, join us today in celebrating all pooches because every pup should be celebrated on National Dog Day! Get to know some of our Altec people and their puppers below!
